Testing and Assessment FAQs
What tests are required as part of the program?
In addition to K12 lesson, unit, and semester assessments, ARVA students in grades 3 through 8 will take the Arkansas Benchmark Exam and PARCC. Students in kindergarten through eighth grades will take the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS). These tests are a required part of participation in ARVA.Students also participate in other assessments, including school and state-mandated, used to drive instruction and monitor progress.
How is student progress assessed?
K–8 is mastery-based, which means K–8 students master concepts before moving on to the next lesson. Following NCLB and state guidelines, students are expected to make at least a year's growth in a year's time. High school students follow a course progression with their teachers and class and are scored more traditionally. Teachers of students in all grades will assess mastery and provide feedback to students and families.
